Methodology
Every calculation is deterministic: the same inputs with the same rule version always give the same result, to the cent.
Principles
- Rates come from the statute and AADE circulars — never from memory or secondary tables.
- Rules are versioned with effective dates. The version is chosen by the date the tax becomes due.
- All amounts use exact decimal arithmetic; only final amounts are rounded, to the cent.
- Vehicle data is matched deterministically first (type, variant, version, technical data). Fuzzy matching is only a supporting signal and never creates data.
- Every value you change is recorded as yours and invalidates dependent values, which are recalculated.
- Where something is uncertain, a range or “Not calculated” is shown — never a falsely precise figure.
- The registration tax is calculated without the purchase price or country. The total cost is only shown when every item it is made of is known.
The detailed formula is explained in the registration tax guide.
Evidence labels
- Statutory
- Calculated with the statutory rules and source-backed inputs. The final amount is assessed by customs.
- Statutory, conditional
- Calculated with the statutory rules, but depends on information you provided or on parameters that are not certain.
- Provider quote
- Amount from a quote you received from a provider.
- Your figure
- Amount you entered.
- Indicative estimate
- Indicative range from public market references — not an official fee or a quote.
- Not calculated
- No reliable basis for calculation. Add the amount once you have a quote.
- Not applicable
- Not payable in the scenario you described.
Rule versions
| Version | In force | Verification | Checked on |
|---|---|---|---|
| GR-RT-2025.07.1 | 28 July 2025 – 31 December 2026 | Government Gazette and AADE worked example | 18 October 2026 |
| GR-RT-2027.01.1 | 1 January 2027 – open-ended | Government Gazette and AADE worked example | 18 October 2026 |
Assumptions where the law is silent
- Age in months counts a started month as a full month, as in AADE worked examples (Ε.2125/2020).
- Expected mileage = 15,000 km × age in months / 12, using the same month count.
- The 0.10% per 500 km reduction is applied proportionally to the excess, consistent with fractional percentages in AADE examples.
- No explicit rounding rule was found. Intermediate values keep full precision; only the final amount is rounded. The customs system may differ by a few cents.
- The calculation date is treated as the date the tax becomes due and as the import date.
Reproducibility
Every result includes the engine version, rule version, exchange rate used and a SHA-256 fingerprint of the inputs. With the same inputs and version, the result reproduces exactly.

Not calculated yet
- Extraction from a COC or registration certificate — you fill those fields in.
- The Greek retail price for models without a documented catalogue price — you enter it.
- Vehicles from outside the EU or without EU registration (customs duty, third-country clearance).
- Customs classification of historic vehicles, which customs decides.
