Classic cars: importing and registering in Greece
For a car over 30 years old, three different things are decided: whether it can be registered, whether it is certified as historic, and how customs classifies it. Age alone gives no exemption.
1. Can it be registered?
Law 4710/2020 (art. 5) prohibits registering Euro 1, 2 and 3 passenger cars and cars without a Euro standard. The exception is cars over 30 years old used exclusively as historic vehicles.
So a 1990 car without a Euro standard can be registered only as historic. A Euro 4 or later car follows the standard procedure, however collectable it is.
2. Historic certification
Historic use requires certification by a competent body, with criteria such as originality, condition and age. We do not set out the procedure in detail here; confirm it with the certifying body before you buy.
Without certification, a Euro 1–3 car or one without a Euro standard cannot be registered. The calculator shows it as “Not permitted”.
3. Customs classification: 8703 or 9705
Passenger cars are normally classified under Combined Nomenclature heading 8703. Some collectors’ vehicles may fall under 9705. Customs decides the classification for the specific car.
Secondary sources state that no registration tax is due under heading 9705. We have not confirmed this in a primary source, so the calculator shows it as a separate scenario and does not deduct it from the total.
What the calculator shows
- The three determinations separately: registration, certification, customs classification.
- Registration tax under the standard rules, where registration is allowed.
- That you need certification, when the car can be registered only as historic.
- Never age over 30 as an automatic exemption.
Frequently asked questions
Does a car over 30 years old pay registration tax?
Age alone gives no exemption. It depends on customs classification and certification. The calculator shows the tax under standard rules and, separately, the heading 9705 scenario.
Can I register a 1998 Euro 2 car?
Not as an ordinary car. Once it is 30 years old and certified, it can be registered for exclusive use as a historic vehicle.
