Greek car registration tax: how it is calculated
Greek registration tax does not depend on what you paid. It starts from the Greek pre-tax retail price of the same model, reduced for age and mileage, taxed in brackets whose rates rise with CO₂ and older Euro standards.
At a glance
- The base is the Greek pre-tax retail price (with factory options) of the model and version when the car was first put on the road.
- The base is reduced for age in months and body type (AADE table) and, for high mileage, by up to 10% more. The total reduction is capped at 95%.
- What remains is taxed in brackets: 4% up to €14,000, 26% up to €17,000, 53% up to €20,000, 62% up to €25,000, 71% up to €30,000 and 30% above.
- Each rate is multiplied by a CO₂ factor (0.95 to 2) and a Euro factor (1 to 3).
- Euro 4 and Euro 5 cars also pay an environmental levy. Electric cars are exempt; hybrids get 50% or 75% off.
1. The list price is the tax base
AADE uses the Greek pre-tax retail price of the same new car (same model, version and factory options) from the price list valid when it was first released. What you paid in Germany or the Netherlands does not matter.
If you cannot find the price, do not guess: a €3,000 error in the base can move the tax by hundreds of euros. The calculator leaves the amount blank rather than estimating it until you enter the price.
2. Depreciation for age and mileage
Age is counted in months from first registration to the day the tax falls due; a started month counts in full, as in AADE’s examples. AADE’s table has separate rates for SUV, hatchback, saloon, convertible, coupé and MPV, capped at 95%.
Mileage only adds a reduction above 15,000 km a year: 0.10% per 500 km over that, up to 10%. The two reductions are combined (not simply added) and together never exceed 95%.
Estates, pick-ups and vans have no column of their own in the table. The calculator then shows a range instead of one amount.
3. CO₂ and Euro factors
Cars first registered in the EU up to 31.12.2020 use NEDC CO₂; from 1.1.2021, WLTP. The two values are never converted into each other.
| CO₂ factor | NEDC (g/km) | WLTP (g/km) |
|---|---|---|
| 0.95 | up to 100 | up to 130 |
| 1.00 | 101–120 | 131–156 |
| 1.10 | 121–140 | 157–182 |
| 1.20 | 141–160 | 183–208 |
| 1.30 | 161–180 | 209–234 |
| 1.40 | 181–200 | 235–260 |
| 1.60 | 201–250 | 261–325 |
| 2.00 | above 250 | above 325 |
| Euro standard | Factor |
|---|---|
| Euro 6c, 6d-TEMP, 6d, 6e, Euro 7 | ×1 |
| Euro 6b (last first registration by 31.8.2018) | ×1.5 |
| Euro 5b | ×2 |
| Euro 6a, Euro 5a and older | ×3 |
The Euro factor follows the emission character in the type-approval number (field V.9 of the registration certificate, or the CoC), not just the stage name: some 2018 Euro 6c and 6d-TEMP cars take ×1.5. Ask the seller for a photo of the registration certificate before you buy.
Worked examples
- Saloon with a Greek list price of €30,000
- Euro 4, CO₂ 182 g/km (NEDC)
- 123 months old, 400,000 km
Registration tax
€4,707.61
+ Environmental levy €3,000.00 = Total €7,707.61
Rules GR-RT-2025.07.1
The inputs of AADE’s worked example (Ε.2125/2020, Annex II). The rates of law 5222/2025 give the same result: €4,707.61 plus a €3,000 environmental levy.
- First registered June 2021, registered in Greece November 2026
- List price €21,500, Euro 6d, CO₂ 128 g/km (WLTP)
- 75,000 km
Registration tax
€1,320.12

- First registered March 2018, registered in Greece November 2026
- List price €32,000, Euro 6b (×1.5 factor), CO₂ 119 g/km (NEDC)
- 140,000 km
Registration tax
€3,150.58

Environmental levy and Euro 1–3
On top of registration tax, Euro 4 cars pay a €3,000 environmental levy and Euro 5a/5b cars €1,000 (law 4710/2020, art. 5). For hybrids it is reduced by the same exemption percentage.
Euro 1, 2, 3 and pre-Euro cars cannot be registered. The only exception is for cars 30 years or older used exclusively as historic vehicles, and it is not automatic.
Electric cars and hybrids
Battery-electric (BEV) and hydrogen (FCEV) cars pay no registration tax. Until 31.12.2026, full and plug-in hybrids get 75% off with CO₂ up to 50 g/km and 50% above that. From 1.1.2027 every hybrid gets 50%.
Mild hybrids are not clearly covered by the law. The calculator shows them as a range, from “no exemption” to “hybrid”.
Frequently asked questions
How is Greek registration tax calculated for a used car from the EU?
From the Greek pre-tax retail price of the model, reduced for age and mileage, taxed at bracket rates of 4%–71% multiplied by CO₂ and Euro factors (law 5222/2025, arts 136 and 142).
Does the price I paid abroad count?
No. The base is the Greek list price of the same model and version when it was first released, not the purchase price.
How much environmental levy does a Euro 4 or Euro 5 car pay?
€3,000 for Euro 4 and €1,000 for Euro 5a/5b, on top of registration tax (law 4710/2020, art. 5).
Which date sets the rates?
The rules in force on the day the obligation to pay the tax arises apply, and age is measured to that day. The calculator uses the date you give it.
