Hybrids: what changes in Greek registration tax in 2027
From 1 January 2027 every full and plug-in hybrid gets a 50% registration-tax exemption. Until 31 December 2026, hybrids with CO₂ up to 50 g/km, in practice plug-ins, get 75%. If you are bringing in a plug-in, the date can double the tax.
The rules before and after
| Car | Until 31.12.2026 | From 1.1.2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Battery-electric (BEV) or hydrogen (FCEV) | Exempt | Exempt |
| Hybrid or plug-in, CO₂ up to 50 g/km | 75% exempt | 50% exempt |
| Hybrid or plug-in, CO₂ above 50 g/km | 50% exempt | 50% exempt |
| Mild hybrid | Uncertain | Uncertain |
Special case: hybrids with 51–75 g/km imported between 1.11.2025 and 31.5.2026 got 75% (law 5222/2025, art. 136 §6α).
The change was made by article 10 of law 5313/2026 and explained by AADE in circular Ε.2039/2026. The same exemption percentage applies to the environmental levy, where one is due.
Example: a plug-in SUV
The same car, with the tax falling due one month later:
- First registered April 2023, 40,000 km
- List price €48,000, Euro 6d, CO₂ 33 g/km (WLTP)
Tax if due on 15 December 2026
€1,921.19
Rules GR-RT-2025.07.1
Tax if due on 15 January 2027
€3,771.22
Rules GR-RT-2027.01.1
Difference: +€1,850.03

Example: a full hybrid
Most full hybrids emit more than 50 g/km and already get 50%, so almost nothing changes. The exemption stays at 50%; the small difference comes from the car being a month older:
- First registered September 2022, 50,000 km
- List price €24,000, Euro 6d, CO₂ 102 g/km (WLTP)
Tax if due on 15 December 2026
€1,207.78
Rules GR-RT-2025.07.1
Tax if due on 15 January 2027
€1,182.09
Rules GR-RT-2027.01.1
Difference: −€25.69

Which date counts
The tax is calculated under the rules of the day the obligation to pay it arises. For a car from another EU country that is linked to its arrival in Greece, not to the day you buy or pay for it.
If you are considering a plug-in, allow time for transport and confirm with your customs broker before you commit. The calculator applies the rules of the date you give it.
Mild hybrids
The law refers to hybrid cars without saying whether 48 V mild hybrids qualify. We have not seen an official answer, so the calculator shows a range from “no exemption” to “hybrid”. Ask customs before relying on the lower figure.
